Blogging about Pokemon

Six hundred and forty nine. There are six hundred and forty nine of those little critters to monster-sized beasts called pokemon.

Look at that mass, covering five generations of the franchise, including the main series, the side series, the spin-off series, an anime, a manga, a trading card series, and more! Gosh that's a lot to come out from a bunch of critters battling each other in a turn based role playing game.

There is a lot to talk about this game, from the specific games, to the pokemon themselves; from the game mechanics, to the history of the series itself. Might as well start at the beginning.

This guy--> Satoshi Tajiri, had an interest in bug collecting when he was a child,
and that was part of his inspiration for creating pokemon: The thought of catching and collecting creatures, and learning about them. Tajiri first convinced the full idea of pokemon in 1990, with the Game Boy catching his attention about people connecting with a link cable, to battle and trade with each other, keeping his collecting idea in mind with trade, and giving the feel of a game with battles.

It took six years for his idea to come to life, with his own company Game Freak nearly becoming bankrupt in the process. Once the original titles Red and Green hit the markets in February of 1996, they were expected to be a failure due to the Game Boy being thought as a dead console. What really happened is that pokemon became an instant hit, and helped revive the Game Boy and Nintendo itself!

I guess the rest is history. Pokemon started out as one hundred and fifty-one, but was originally planned for over one hundred and ninety, and as a result, some of those missed the cut, became apart of the second generation. More and more got added each generation, and now in the 5th generation, it makes six hundred and forty-nine.

So, to finish this first post off, which pokemon is your favorite? Mine is #005: Charmeleon. Here's a list of them all in numerical order.

  2. Hey Nick, thank you for writing a blog on pokemon. It is something I really remember from younger years. I must have spent over a thousand dollars on the card game. Thanks for bringing me up to speed. Kevin
